3:02p - What's New at Chez Absintheur
Well, there's a counter on the site, for one. That's been rather enlightening - it's let me know that folks are finding and reading these pages not only in the United States, Germany, and Brazil, but also in Italy, Indonesia, and the Yukon, to name a few locales. Here's a cheery wave to all of you - I'm glad you're stopping in. And as I said some months ago: it's alright to say hello, you know. And, I got around to adding a search engine and tweaking it so that it works properly. At first, it was referencing all the content and all the links on any of the friends pages; then, once it got that out of its system, it tried to reference all of the content and links on every one of the Livejournal interest pages. Do you know how many 'interests' people have listed in Livejournal? Nor do I. But there are probably several thousand. So for an hour or so last night, the engine would reference about five pages' worth of my actual journal, and then diverge and follow all the links from the pages telling you exactly who is interested in Leonard Cohen or Coil. Comical. But now it's functional, I daresay, and will reference all the pages of my journal as well as the profile information and the various louches left by others. So give it a try if you're so inclined. It's a hoot. I'm nearly finished the review of the last disc of the Ciphered Mix 5 set. It will probably post later this evening. There's been some response in the louches to the review of the material on the first disc; as for the third, Phil wrote a bit here, on his own site. I was able to add a slew of new artists to my Sonicnet station. (Speaking of 'slew,' who was it who asked me about the etymology of that word recently? At any rate, 'slew' is a Gaelic word - it derives from 'slaugh,' which is Gaelic for 'multitude'.) There were twenty of us at the beach cottage this past weekend. Twenty - that's the most in a long time. It wasn't as epic as the writing weekends I used to have there with my old band, but it was a lot of fun. Just cool enough to keep the mosquitos away, and to make the fire on the hearth feel really good; and just warm enough that the water was still temperate and the evening breeze's hints of autumn felt gorgeous. I cooked a lot of food, and everyone ate, drank, and made merry. It was cool seeing three or four different groups of friends and friends-of-friends come together, many of whom had never met before but hit it off rather well. Good times. Tomorrow morning, all of my paperwork and a lot of money will at long last be mailed off to the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, which means that within six to eight weeks, I ought to finally be given permission to sit for the National Certification Examination. < heavy sarcasm > I've only been certified in Integrative Bodywork (aka Transformative Bodywork) for nigh on three years now; and I was only the assistant teacher and practice supervisor at an international training program for massage therapy; I'm not sure that I'm ready for this exceptionally validating test < /heavy sarcasm >. Does anyone out there know anything about bhangra? Or Desi hip-hop? It's been a couple of months since a friend of mine played me a bunch of tracks on a mini-disc mix, but she didn't know the names of any of the artists, and I haven't found too many on my own, either. None of the groups I know of are indexed in Sonicnet, either. Does anyone have any recommendations, or know where I could hear more? And what about the new album from Gorky's Zygotic Mynci? Has anyone heard any of the tracks? I haven't, though I've heard the album is quite good; I've also heard that it has no songs in Welsh. That's a departure for them, and kind of a pity. I rather liked their last release, The Blue Trees EP, and I always liked the Welsh tunes. It seemed like the media was slightly enamoured with the Welsh bands for a while, but the Mynci never really seemed to catch on as well in America as in Europe; same for Super Furry Animals. Maybe an album sans-Welsh will "make them more accessible". They're probably still too interesting or unique or creative to see any radio airplay apart from the college stations, though. Radio doesn't believe in quality music. Feh.
